This Console was actually Marketed as “Educational” in the US attempting to boost sales against the Domineering Atari VCS, which had already been available in the US Market 6 months Prior and selling very well.
47 numbered Game Cartridges where released by Philips for the Videopac of which only 38 where released in the US under the Odyssey2 branding. In the US they were not numbered and, in some cases, were given different names. There were also Five (3 being Educational games) Odyssey2 Games that were only released in the US, also the US had a Speech Synthesiser Module, known as “The Voice” and 9 games had Voice enhanced features for use with this add-on.
Exclusive to Europe there was a “Chess Module” which was a cartridge wired to an extended memory module to assist with the significant computation power the game needed to work.
Shortly after the G7000, there was a second edition of the console (G7200) with built in black & white monitor. (This had a very limited UK release and our example is a rare black model from France- with no box unfortunately.
The majority were white, although there was also a very limited release of blue models.
In 1983, with the release of the Philips G7400 (3rd Gen Consoles) The Game numbering continued from 48 onwards. Sadly this console was not released in the UK, but four of these titles 49, 51, 52 & 53 did get released in the UK to work with this console. T
Two other Companies—”Parker” and “Imagic” also released a small number of games for the Videopac alongside other Consoles. Whilst this console did not have a great UK following, it was the biggest selling second generation console in the
Netherlands. (Philips being a Dutch Company).
This consoles still retains a good following and there are a number of “Homebrew” games that have been released for the console (and it successor the 3rd Gen G7400) over the recent years, but we have not collected these “unofficial” Titles.
